I originally worked in the Lord Chancellor’s Department at Middlesbrough County Court before embarking on formal legal training with two prominent Darlington firms. I qualified as a fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives and then as a solicitor. I joined DMA in 1996, became a partner in 1999, and then a director when the firm became limited in 2016.
For almost all of my legal career I have been involved in litigation – principally personal injury work – whether that be a fairly minor road traffic whiplash claim or at the other extreme, acting for people with life changing injuries such as paraplegia or tetraplegia. You can never give people who sustain such serious injuries the same life back, so all you can do is ensure that they get the compensation that they deserve.
The change in the legal landscape in relation to personal injury cases has meant that I have now moved away from that type of work and I now focus on the management side of the business, particularly on the compliance side. This has given me a new and different challenge, and one that I am thoroughly enjoying.
In my spare time I try and keep fit with regular gym sessions as well as playing tennis. I enjoy watching sport, particularly football. I enjoy sampling good food, listening to music, and attending as many Bruce Springsteen concerts as finances and my wife will allow.
